What is a notary?

A notary, or notary public, is trained to verify documents. Their signatures and stamps are required to complete some documents. Notaries confirm a signer’s identity, understanding of the document and willingness to sign. However, they won’t ensure your files are legal or correct.

What can a notary do?

Notaries can verify:

  • Wills
  • Deeds
  • Powers of attorney
  • Contracts
  • Agreements
  • And more!

Notaries cannot:

  • Certify copies of birth, death or marriage certificates.
  • Represent employers to verify employment eligibility.
  • Choose, complete or give advice on how to fill documents.
  • Provide other legal counsel.

How to Use the Notary’s Services

Call (262) 636-9170 to make an appointment during the library’s hours. Same-day appointments are not always available. All signers must be present in person.

Note: We offer notarization only to individuals. Unfortunately, we can’t notarize documents for businesses or organizations.

What to Bring to a Notarization Appointment

  • Any documents, unsigned. You will need to sign in front of the notary.
  • Current, valid ID with your photo and signature.
Examples: Driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, U.S. passport. See if your ID qualifies.
  • Your own witnesses, if your document needs witness signatures.
